Scope and Content Interior of St Andrew's Church (now St Andrew and St George), George Street, Edinburgh St Andrew's Church was built in George Street in 1782-4 following the loss of its intended site in St Andrew Square. This shallow space suited the oval, or strictly elliptical, church of which this seems to be the first important example in Britain. The interior's oval plan is complemented by the ceiling of concentric ovals surrounded by garlands, and the curving panelled gallery supported by Ionic columns. The pews are mainly late 19th century, although those in the gallery are original. William Pirnie, who built St Andrew's Church, was one of several builders involved in the construction of James Craig's New Town from 1772 to 1786. They often took a 'feu' (or plot) themselves, built a house, and then sold. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
