Scope and Content St Andrew's Church (now St Andrew and St George), George Street, Edinburgh St Andrew's Church was built in George Street in 1782-4 following the loss of its intended site in St Andrew Square. This shallow space suited the oval, or strictly elliptical, church of which this seems to be the first important example in Britain. The oval church has a portico of smooth ashlar with four Corinthian columns raised on a couple of steps up from the street. The slender steeple, 51m high, designed by William Sibbald, was built by Alexander Stevens in 1789. The intended site for this church on the east side of St Andrew Square was already occupied by 1774 by Sir Laurence Dundas' splendid mansion. The church was finally built on an 'inferior site', without room for a churchyard, in George Street. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
