Scope and Content St Andrew Square, Edinburgh Early 19th century view of the east side St Andrew Square, the square at the eastern end of James Craig's New Town, became, by the late 18th century, one of the most popular and fashionable places in which to live. The two similar houses on either side of the central courtyard, where Sir Laurence Dundas built his mansion in 1774, were the first to show architecture on a grand scale in the New Town. By the 1820s, some shops had appeared in the square. The house on the left was built in 1769 for lawyer Andrew Crosbie, Sir Walter Scott's counsellor Pleydell in 'Guy Mannering'. Other distinguished residents of the square included the Earl of Northesk, Sir Adam Ferguson and the wealthy Sir Laurence Dundas. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
