Scope and Content New Town of Edinburgh from the upper gallery of the Scott Monument Watercolour sketch Architect James Craig's simple gridiron plan for a New Town for Edinburgh in 1767 consisted of a grand main thoroughfare, George Street, with a square at either end, flanked by Princes Street to the south and Queen Street to the north. Princes Street lies in the foreground. St Andrew Square, the square at the east end of George Street, is on the right. In the background is Queen Street, and beyond are fields and meadows stretching down to the River Forth. Princes Street, 'the most magnificent esplanade in Europe', was originally a row of plain terraced houses. By the middle of the 19th century, shopkeeping and other public or commercial uses were forcing the residents to live elsewhere. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
