Scope and Content Renfrew Ferry, Renfrewshire This is an ancient ferry crossing of the Clyde. In 1868 a single-chain ferry was established by the Burgh of Renfrew, They installed a double-chain ferry in 1897, and this was taken over by the Clyde Navigation Trust in 1911. This view shows the ferry approaching the north (Yoker) ramp, with the double chains emerging from the water. The vessel pulled itself across the river along the chains. This diesel-electric ferry was built by Fleming and Ferguson of Paisley in 1952. The chain ferry service at Renfrew closed in 1984, and has been replaced by a foot ferry operated by Strathclyde Passenger Transport. The two ferryboats latterly used both survive, one as a night-club in Glasgow. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
