Date 11/11/1975

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 457011

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Salmon fishing station, Cairnie Pier, Perthshire This was one of a number of salmon-fishing stations - lodges - on the lower reaches of the Tay which were operated by the Tay Salmon Fishery Co. This was the only one with masonry buildings by the 1970s. This view shows the hand-worked narrow-gauge railway that linked the fishing station buildings with the river-bank, at the river end. A short of rail ran down the beach to ease movement of the catch. Note the flood debris on the track. Commercial salmon fishing on the lower Tay ended in 1998, when the rights were bought out by the Atlantic Salmon Trust, to conserve fish stocks. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
