Scope and Content Interior of central barn at Maam Steading, Inveraray estate, Argyll and Bute John, 5th Duke of Argyll (1723-1806), was interested in agriculture and science and encouraged advanced farming methods on his estate at Inveraray. Designed by Robert Mylne (1733-1814) Maam Steading was the last stage in the Duke's experimental farms. The interior of the barn is divided by a rubble mid-wall supporting the double roof. It rises to the same height as the internal wall-head of the barn and is pierced by three tall arches. In the end walls, there are doorways into the side wings. There would have been a timber floor at a height of 4.3m, but only the joist-holes remain. Half of the floor was designed for threshing, and half was designed for circulating air for drying hay and corn. The ground floor was paved with stone. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
