Scope and Content Miners' row, Rowanburn, Dumfriesshire A curious sight in rural Dumfries-shire, this group of three rows of former coal-miners' cottages was built in connection with Rowanburn Colliery, which exploited the Canonbie Coalfield. The colliery closed in 1922, but the cottages survived. This view shows the wash-houses and ashpits which served the rows of houses. Sanitation was probably by earth closets, housed in these little buildings. The original uniform appearance of the rows has been lost through alterations made by individual owners, but they were still recognisable as colliery housing in 1975.
