Castleton Parish, Limekiln General View

SC 455153

Description Castleton Parish, Limekiln General View

Date 9/1975

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 455153

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Limekiln near Newcastleton, Roxburghshire This kiln may well have been built in connection with the laying out of the village of Newcastleton in 1793. It is an unusual structure, with an angled front, with a draw arch in each face, both giving access to a single shaft. This view shows the kiln in its wild moorland setting, with the remains of what looks like open-cast working of limestone. The quarries further up the hill are modern. This limeworks, though it may have been founded for making building lime, probably also made lime for agricultural purposes. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
