Glenlochar Barrage View from E

SC 455104

Description Glenlochar Barrage View from E

Date 4/9/1975

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 455104

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Glenlochar Barrage, near Crossmichael, Kirkcudbrightshire This structure was built to control the level of Loch Ken, which is used as a reservoir for the Galloway Hydro-electric scheme. It is a steel and concrete structure, with six large steel sluices which can be raised up concrete piers. This view shows the barrage from the south east. Note the steel truss footbridge over the tops of the piers. In flood conditions the gates act as weirs, allowing surplus water to flow over the top. The Galloway Hydro-electric scheme was the first large-scale scheme of its kind in Scotland built for public supply, and is still very much in use, unlike its coal-fired contemporaries.
