Newton Stewart, Cree Mills General View

SC 455079

Description Newton Stewart, Cree Mills General View

Date 4/9/1975

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 455079

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Cree Mills, Newton Stewart, Wigtownshire This was a small woollen mill, making tweeds and other woven fabrics. It consisted of a range of single-storey weaving sheds, with ancillary buildings. It was the last representative of a local industry established since the 18th century. This view shows the location of the mills, which were beside the river Cree on what was probably originally a water-power site. The mills have since closed, and the buildings have been demolished.
