Scope and Content Maidens Harbour, Ayrshire Maidens Harbour probably dates in part from the 18th century. It consists of a long, irregular west breakwater pier, with a low concrete breakwater of c1950 to the east. There are four cast-iron pots in brick settings, for treating nets with bark extract. This view shows two of the barking pots, with part of a third on the right. Before the days of nets made from synthetic fibres, cotton nets were tanned with bark extract to preserve them from rotting. Maidens Harbour was probably improved in the 18th century for coastal trade, but it became a fishing harbour in the later 19th century, a position it retained until the 1950s.
