Scope and Content Dunure Harbour, Ayrshire This is an almost square basin formed by two breakwater piers with rounded ends, on the north and west and two quays, on the south and east. The entrance to the harbour faces north, and is protected by natural rock outcrops. This view shows the harbour from the south east. The wooden frameworks on the east quay were erected to dry ring nets used by the herring boats fishing out of the harbour. Note the remains of a lighthouse at the end of the west pier. This harbour was probably built for coastal trading vessels, probably in part for the lime trade, as there are two large kilns above the harbour. It became, however, a centre for the Clyde herring fishing in the later 19th century. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
