Description Irvine Harbour, Cranes View of cranes by quayside, from S

Date 3/9/1975

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 455052

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Irvine Harbour, Ayrshire This part of the harbour was the last to be used commercially. It was wood-piled, with a wooden deck and was probably of the 1920s or 30s. There were two cranes on the wharf, one rail-mounted, the other on tracks. This view shows the two cranes on the wooden part of the wharf. The rail-mounted one is on the left. It was made by Alexander Chaplin and Co, who had works in Govan, Glasgow. Since this photograph was taken the wharf has been the subject of waterfront improvement, and the tracked crane has been removed. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
