Date 3/9/1975

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 455029

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Walker's Sugar Refinery, Greenock, Renfrewshire This refinery had buildings of various dates from the mid 19th century on. It was badly damaged in the Greenock blitz of 1941, but was back in production much sooner than Westburn. This view is of West Shaw Street looking south and shows the town-centre location of the refinery, with the largest block on the right, an eight storey flat-roofed building constructed of red and white brick, with a cast iron water tank on the roof. This refinery was, like the Westburn Refinery, owned latterly by Tate and Lyle, It had closed when this photograph was taken, and was demolished shortly afterwards.
