Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 455026

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Shaws Water Mill, Greenock, Renfrewshire This mill, which made knitted worsted outer and undergarments and woollen yarn for hand knitting, was founded on the Shaws Water Works by Fleming, Reid and Co. The firm pioneered direct selling with their Scotch Wool and Hosiery shops. This view shows the gatehouse and offices, probably a design of the early 1900s, and very likely by a Glasgow architect. The mills closed c1980, in the face of fierce competition from foreign producers, and the mills have since been demolished. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
