Scope and Content James Watt Dock, Greenock, Renfrewshire This large wet dock was built to compete with Glasgow's new Queen's Dock, opened in 1878. It was designed by WR Kinipple, and is a roughly rectangular basin with a short pier at its eastern end. The dock gate was of the submerging type. This view shows the submerging dock gate in the raised position. The large shed on the left was part of Scotts' Diesel Engine Works. The dock did not in the end manage to compete with the Glasgow docks, but did serve Greenock's needs, especially for the importation of raw sugar for refining in Greenock refineries. This traffic continued until the 1990s. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
