Scope and Content Comet replica, Port Glasgow, Renfrewshire This replica of Henry Bell's paddle steamer 'Comet' was commissioned by Lithgows Ltd to mark the 150th anniversary of its first voyage. The wooden hull was built by Jones of Buckie, and the engines and boiler by Rankin and Blackmore, Greenock. This view shows the side of the hull of the replica newly positioned in the town-centre car park at Port Glasgow, after being stored in Lithgows' yard since 1962 when she sailed from Greenock to Helensburgh and back and was exhibited in Glasgow. The original 'Comet' was built for Henry Bell. The hull was constructed by John Wood at Port Glasgow, the engine by John Robertson, and the boiler by David Napier, both in Glasgow. She was the first commercial steamboat in Europe. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
