Scope and Content Gourock Ropeworks, Port Glasgow, Renfrewshire The Gourock Ropework Co, founded in Gourock, moved here in 1797, at first making ropes only, but diversifying into canvas and netmaking. The firm took over Richardson's sugar refinery in 1868. This view shows the works from the south east. Behind the chimney is the former Richardson's sugar refinery, with to the left the house for the beam engine that drove the works The buildings nearest to the camera were stores for raw materials. All the factory buildings on this site have been demolished apart from the former sugar refinery. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
