Markinch Station View across tracks from E

SC 454962

Description Markinch Station View across tracks from E

Date 2/9/1975

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 454962

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Markinch Station, Fife This station was built by the Edinburgh and Northern Railway, architect David Bell. The station is unusual in having the main building, complete with awning on a terrace above the platforms. This view shows the station from the east, showing the Italianate main building on its railed terrace, with a wooden shelter on the north-bound platform below. Markinch was the station for the Rothes estate, owned by one of the biggest coal-owners in Scotland, which probably accounts for the elaborate arrangement of the facilities here.
