Scope and Content Former engine pit, Thornton, Fife This was a most interesting survival, dominated by the three-storey house for a steam beam pumping engine, which had been incorporated in a farm steading. The pit was out of use by 1854. This view shows the complex from the east. The three-storey building housed the beam pumping engine, and the lower building on the left may well have been the boiler-house. The slots above the first-floor arch were probably for timber baulks. All the buildings on the site, except the engine-house, have been demolished, leaving what is now a neglected structure in isolation. This is unfortunate, because some of the other buildings were probably part of the colliery. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
