Scope and Content Former engine pit, Thornton, Fife This was a most interesting survival, dominated by the three-storey house for a steam beam pumping engine, which had been incorporated in a farm steading. The pit was out of use by 1854. This view shows the complex from the west. The bricked -up arch is where the beam of the engine protruded; the pit shaft was immediately in front of the engine house. All the buildings on the site, except the engine-house, have been demolished, leaving what is now a neglected structure in isolation. This is unfortunate, because some of the other buildings were probably part of the colliery. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
