Scope and Content Weir, Fairafar Mill, Cramond, Midlothian This substantial weir was almost certainly built for the adaptation of Fairafar Mill to an iron forge by Carron Company in the 1770s. The water power generated by such a large fall on a river with a reliable flow was substantial in 18th century terms. This view show the scale and integrity of the Fairafar weir, which unlike may of its contemporaries has stodd the test of time. The mill-stead, on the left in this picture has been reduced to a few fragmentary remains, but would probably repay careful physical examination. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
