Edinburgh, Cramond Mill View from WNW showing NW front

Description Edinburgh, Cramond Mill View from WNW showing NW front

Date 1/9/1975

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 454857

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Offices, (Cockle Mill), Cramond, Midlothian This range of buildings seem to have operated in connection with the adaptation of Cockle Mill to an iron forge in 1the 1770s, by Carron Company. Appearances suggest that the three-storey and attic block may have been a warehouse. This view shows the range from the south west, with the possible warehouse block on the right. The rest of the range is likely to have been administrative offices, with perhaps a dwelling house. Iron was an expensive and easily negotiable material in late 18th century Scotland, and it is likely that considerable care was taken to keep it secure and to monitor how it was used.
