Scope and Content Kennetpans Distillery This was one of the 'great and middle-class' distilleries founded in the 1770s to serve the London market. This one was established by John Stein. It had two early Boulton & Watt steam engines. It seems to have closed in about 1825. This view shows the distillery remains from the south east, with one of the former engine houses behind the derelict boat. The distillery was close to coal mines, and to a quay on a creek of the river Forth, making shipment to London simple. The large distilleries of the 1770s were among the largest industrial enterprises of any kind in late 18th century Scotland. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
