Scope and Content Tunnel on the Alloa Railway, Alloa, Clackmannanshire This short tunnel under a main road was constructed for the Alloa Railway, a horse-hauled private railway built to connect coal mines to the north of the town with the glassworks and with a quay on the river Forth. This view looking north along the line of the railway shows the small size of the tunnel. The railway was supplanted by conventional locomotive-hauled lines during the 19th century, and part of the route, including this tunnel, was converted into a footpath.
