Scope and Content The Long Steps (Lang Steps) leading to Spylaw Street, Colinton, Edinburgh Spylaw Street, known simply as the 'main road' until 1913, was the village street of old Colinton. It runs down the steep hill to the bridge over the Water of Leith, and the parish church on the other side of the river. The Long Steps are a series of steps that lead down part of an old track towards the bridge and the parish church by the river. The steps were salvaged from Edinburgh's Old Royal Infirmary when it was demolished in 1884. The Lang Steps, together with Dreghorn Loan, are part of an ancient right of way, mentioned in 1709, that led from the old bridge and crossing of the river at Colinton, south to the common grazing grounds in the Pentland Hills.
