Scope and Content Sewer ventilator, Hutcheon Street, Aberdeen Sewer ventilators were built where sewer gases were liable to collect in a section of sewer where they could not easily escape. They had tall hollow standards with open-work tops, and generally looked like lamp standards without the lamps. This view shows one of an identical pair of such ventilators, designed with ornamental capitals. There were made tall enough to disperse the gases in an inoffensive way. Ventlilators of this type are uncommon, and these are good examples. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
