Scope and Content Spylaw House, Spylaw Park, Colinton, Edinburgh Spylaw House was built in 1773 for James Gillespie, a tobacco merchant in Edinburgh, who owned several snuff mills on the banks of the Water of Leith at Colinton. The house was an addition to a 17th-century mill house which had a snuff mill at the rear. The house, standing in the extensive grounds of Spylaw Park, is a two-storeyed 'addition' which replaced the earlier house of c.1650 but retained its rear wing. The Georgian north frontage has a central pediment and a magnificent double-curved stair. In 1759 James Gillespie took over the feu of Spylaw mill and house. He personally supervised the work of producing snuff in the mill immediately behind the house, while his brother, John, was in charge of their tobacco shop in Edinburgh.
