Scope and Content Weir and lade, Avonbank Bleachworks, Millheugh, Larkhall, Lanarkshire This works was founded in about 1796 as a calico printing works, and appears to have been converted to a whisky distillery in 1827. When that failed it was converted to a bleach works, c1836. It was still working as a bleach works in 1974. This view shows the weir and the lade which supplied the water to the works, the buildings of which can be seen in the background. Latterly this works specialised in making cotton window-blind material, which involved bleaching cotton cloth, dyeing it, and then finishing it by beetling (hammering it with wooden hammers) to close up the texture and make it light proof.
