Scope and Content Biggar Gas Works, Lanarkshire Biggar Gas Works was founded in 1836. The original retort house survives as the former coal store, but the bulk of the complex is 20th century. The works closed in 1973 and apart from the demolition of the chimney has been retained almost unaltered. This view shows the works from the approach road, with the asbestos-roofed retort-house on the left, and the works office and gas showroom to the right. The stone base of the chimney is visible next to the right gable of the retort house. The works is in the care of Historic Scotland, and was for many years opened to the public in association with the National Museums of Scotland.
