Date 21/8/1975

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 452236

Scope and Content Thankerton Bridge, Lanarkshire This bridge, which spans the river Clyde, has two large segmental arches, that on the east being longer and flatter than the western one. The pier is relatively slender, and there are triangular cutwaters. This view shows the bridge from the south east. The arch rings are of rubble, though the bridge is given a finished appearance by the projecting course above the arch ring. This is one of the oldest bridges over the Clyde, the only older ones being Clydesholm (1694-9) and Hyndford (1773). Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
