Scope and Content Former gas retort, Stobo smithy, Peebles-shire There were two of these closed end fireclay retorts at Stobo smithy, being used to terminate sections of newly-built stone boundary wall. It is likely that they were used in an estate gas works supplying Stobo Castle with gas for lighting. This view shows one of the retorts in place as a wall terminal. The fireclay was about 0.05m thick. Estate gas works were not uncommon in the mid and late 19th century, but were quickly superseded by electric generating stations at the end of the century.
