Description Falkirk, Forth and Clyde Canal, Lock 16 Distant view from WSW showing W front and basin

Date 1975

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 452112

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Lock 16, Forth and Clyde Canal, Stirlingshire The Forth and Clyde Canal was completed to this point by the end of 1770, but the lock did not develop its full importance until the Union Canal link to Edinburgh was opened in 1822 The lock was the terminus for passenger services from Glasgow. This view shows the lock at the far end of the basin to its west. The width of the canal at this pointed allowed boats to be winded (turned), as some, including the passenger boats, did not wish to use the locks further east. The junction with the Union Canal, in front of the van on the right of this view, was closed in 1932, and the Forth and Clyde itself closed in 1962. Both canals are to reopen in 2001, but with a new link between them further to the west. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
