Scope and Content New Lanark from the gasworks, Lanarkshire New Lanark was founded as a cotton-spinning complex by David Dale, a Glasgow linen merchant and banker, in 1784. The bulk of the complex was built between then and c.1826. This view shows the mills from the south east when the mill area was owned by Metal Extractions Ltd, a metal-recycling concern who allowed scrap and rubbish to accumulate all over the area, as seen here. The mills are now in the ownership of The New Lanark Conservation Trust, and brought back into productive use. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
