Scope and Content Remains of ironworks, Glenbuck, Ayrshire The Glenbuck Ironworks was founded in about 1796 by John Rumney of Workington and others. It had a single furnace, and had a short life, closing in 1812. This view shows the visible remains of the works, with the head of a semicircular arch visible. This may be part of the blast furnace, but may not. One of the last contracts for the works was the casting of tram plates for the Kilmarnock & Troon Railway, the first public railway in Scotland, opened in 1811. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
