Scope and Content Kilmarnock Station, Ayrshire This station was opened in 1843 by the Glasgow, Paisley Kilmarnock & Ayr Railway, and largely rebuilt in 1878 by the Glasgow & South Western Railway. This view shows the three-storey block of the 1843 station, which housed for many years the train control centre for the railway network of central Ayrshire. The station as extended had three through platforms and two bay platforms, with cast and wrought-iron awnings on the Glasgow-bound platform and the bays. These have now had most of the glazing removed. The 1843 block has been demolished. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
