Scope and Content Limekilns, Charlestown, Fife This is the largest group of kilns in Scotland -14 in all - built by successive earls of Elgin. Initially the lime was shipped from the adjacent harbour, and coal probably came in the same way. In the early 19th century the Elgin Railway was built. This view shows the original bank of kilns from the harbour. The Elgin Railway brought coal for the kilns - and for shipment from the harbour - from Dunfermline. Later the North British Railway built a branch line to the harbour. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
