Scope and Content Kilmarnock Station, Ayrshire This station was opened in 1843 by the Glasgow, Paisley Kilmarnock & Ayr Railway, and largely rebuilt in 1878 by the Glasgow & South Western Railway. This view shows the street frontage of the 1878 building from the carriage ramp, with the three-storey block of the 1843 station beyond. The station as extended had three through platforms and two bay platforms, with cast and wrought-iron awnings on the Glasgow-bound platform and the bays. These have now had most of the glazing removed. The 1843 block has been demolished. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
