Scope and Content Glenruthven Weaving Factory, Auchterarder, Perthshire This factory was built as a power-loom weaving factory in 1877, and was the last steam-powered factory of any kind in Scotland. It retained much of its original machinery until it closed in the mid 1980s. This view shows the steam engine which drove the mill through a system of belts and pulleys. This steam engine is a late 19th-century tandem-compound, slide-valve type. The factory latterly specialised in very high-quality mixed-fibre cloths - made of fine worsted or cashmere, cotton and silk yarns, and sold mainly to London shirt and tie makers. The steam engine and boiler were retained after it closed. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
