Scope and Content Glenruthven Weaving Factory, Auchterarder, Perthshire This factory was built as a power-loom weaving factory in 1877, and was the last steam-powered factory of any kind in Scotland. It retained much of its original machinery until it closed in the mid 1980s. This view shows an operative 'drawing-in' warp threads which have been wound on to a drum or beam. This involves paring each thread through a hole in a heddle, a frame with wire loops which raises or lowers the threads to form the fabric in the loom. The factory latterly specialised in very high-quality mixed-fibre cloths - made of fine worsted or cashmere, cotton and silk yarns, and sold mainly to London shirt and tie makers. The steam engine and boiler were retained after it closed. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
