Blackness Village, Pump General View

SC 451769

Description Blackness Village, Pump General View

Date 5/10/1974

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 451769

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Hand pump, Blackness, West Lothian This is a handsome classical hand-pump, given by Alexander McLeod to the inhabitants of Blackness. It is a reminder of the days before piped water was available in many communities, and when private benefaction could affect many lives. This view shows that Mr McLeod wanted the very best for the villagers. The style of the domed cap is similar to that of the once-ubiquitous 'Kennedy wells', so that it is likely that the pump was made by Glenfield & Kennedy of Kilmarnock. The original purpose of the pump having gone, it is now preserved as a monument. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
