Scope and Content Railway near Philpstoun, West Lothian The Edinburgh & Glasgow Railway was the first really well engineered line north of the Border, with easy gradients and sweeping curves, achieved by heavy earthworks, long viaducts and tunnels. This view shows the line near Philipstoun, with the spent-shale bing of the former Philpstoun Oil Works in the left background. Note the sweeping curve and the long shallow cutting. The Edinburgh & Glasgow is one of the least altered of the early main lines in Britain, though almost all the original station buildings have gone. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
