Scope and Content Limekilns, Raw Camps, Midlothian This is a large and varied group of kilns on either side of a shallow valley. On the north side is a range consisting of a small single-draw kiln with a large four-draw kiln built on to it. To the south are the decayed remains of three 4-draw kilns. This view shows the overgrown south range of kilns. Kilns of this type had vertical shafts which were charged with lumps of limestone, mixed with coal. The coal burned, and the heat produced drove off carbon dioxide from the limestone, leaving quicklime, the saleable product. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
