Pathhead, Lothian Bridge View from SW

SC 451737

Description Pathhead, Lothian Bridge View from SW

Date 4/10/1974

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 451737

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Lothian Bridge, Pathhead, Midlothian This is an unusual example of a rural road viaduct, of five spans, over an almost dry valley. It was designed by Thomas Telford, on similar lines to his earlier Dean Bridge in Edinburgh, with lighter arches carrying the footpaths. This view shows the bridge from the south west, with the segmental outer (ascenticious) arches lightening the appearance of the semicircular arches carrying the carriageway. This bridge was part of an improved carriage road to Jedburgh and the north of England, now the A68 trunk road. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
