Cockenzie Generating Station View from E

SC 451683

Description Cockenzie Generating Station View from E

Date 4/10/1974

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 451683

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Cockenzie Power Station, East Lothian This is one of two large coal-fired electricity generating stations built on the Firth of Forth to take advantage of improvements in steam turbine and generator technology to reduce generating costs. Cockenzie is the smaller of the two. This view shows the station from the south east. The simple and elegant design minimises the apparent size of what is a very large building. When built this power station was intended to burn coal from deep mines in Midlothian. These have now closed, and most of the fuel now comes from open-cast mines.
