Date 4/10/1974

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Scope and Content Slateford Viaduct, Midlothian This 14-span viaduct was built for the Caledonian Railway, to designs by Locke & Errington, and features the bull-nosed masonry they favoured. The viaduct spans the Water of Leith. This view shows the simplicity of the design, and the way in which the use of textured masonry gives an understated effect. The Caledonian Railway provided Edinburgh with its first through railway to London. Since this photograph was taken the line has been electrified. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
