Scope and Content View of sundial from the south, Asknish House, Argyll and Bute Asknish House was built for Robert Campbell of Asknish, sheriff-depute of Argyll. It was probably built between 1783 and 1787, as there are no records of window tax being paid at that time and its architectural features are consistent with that period. This sundial stands in a field 130m south-east of the house, which can be seen to the left. The sundial, carved from sandstone and dating to 1695, stands on a four-stepped circular pedestal which probably dates to the late 19th century. The shaft is surmounted by a faceted globe and an obelisk. The globe is decorated with sunken triangles and hemispheres. Both the globe and the obelisk have gnomons, which indicate the time by creating a shadow which points to the hour. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
