Description Shortrigg View from SW showing horsemill and windmill

Date 29/8/1974

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 450607

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Windmill stump and horse-engine house, Shortrigg Farm, Dumfriesshire The combination seen here of a horse-engine house and a windmill both apparently intended to drive the same threshing mill, is very unusual, and possibly unique. This view shows the slender tapering tower of the windmill, with a Victorian slated cap, and the circular horse-engine house to the left. To the right of the windmill is part of the threshing barn. The arrangement of the internal workings is not known, but the horse engine was probably used when there was not enough wind to drive the threshing mill. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
