Scope and Content Glencaple Quay, Dumfriesshire This quay, like Kingholm Quay further up the Nith, was rebuilt to accommodate vessels which could reach Dumfries itself. The works, in fact consist of a pier giving access to the deep channel of the river, probably primarily for steamboats. This view shows the upstream side of the pier. The transit sheds are probably early 20th century.. The grassy area in front of the quay appears to have been open water in the early 19th century. The quay was used by coastal shipping until the mid 20th century, but is now virtually disused. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
